LHS student wins two consecutive division and national contests

Lagro High School Grade 10 student, Isaac Red Amba, won Division level, Online Spoken Word Poetry and National level, Earthistic Traditional Art Category in the month of November.

Amba won the first contest, Online Spoken Word Poetry in the Division level placing 2nd among the 10 schools that competed at Quezon City Public Library in Cubao on November 18, 2021.

He also placed 3rd amongst 15 school competitors in the Earthistic Traditional Art Category at National level on November 29, 2021.

"I was happy and overwhelmed kasi I am achieving those awards. Isipin mo first time ko sumali sa spoken tas nanalo agad, even though nakakapagod and sobrang hirap, I think it is all worth it especially I am recognized as well," said Amba.

He stated that this was not the first time he had entered and on a poster-making competition, but this was the first time he felt nervous about almost failing to provide the artwork on time due to poor internet connection.

"I got nervous but felt fulfilled the time na na-pass ko na yung work ko and pumasok naman. I feel really grateful sa support na binigay sakin ng classmates, family and other friends and relatives ko na naging contributing factor din ng pagkapanalo ko. I am indeed blessed with all the people around me that always give me the best support," Amba added.

The awarding for the Online Spoken Word Poetry gave the winner, Isaac Red Amba with cash prize on December 2, 2021 and for the Earthistic Traditional art Category on December 4 of 2021.

Former campus journalist gives back with 2 tablets

Lagro High School's former campus journalist donated two Mediatek tablets for the journalism class, delivered to Lagro High School via Lalamove, last January 6.

Edgardo Vasquez handed out the tablets as goodwill for the Lagro High School campus journalists in need for this school year.

"I think na we should always give back to our alma mater especially may pandemic, marami talagang marami talagang studyante ang gusto makapag-aral kaso nahihirapan, kaya kung kaya tumulong, tutulong tayo.", said Vasquez.

English Journalism adviser, Ms. Josephine Bonsol, expressed her gratitude and appreciation to her former student.

"They are the same batch na pag may contest, nagbibigay ng transpo and food natin.", she added.

"I am very happy that some of them still care about the Campus Journalism and the journalists. And every year, nagbibigay sila ng electricfans kaya anim yung electricfan sa classroom.", she stated.

Vasquez was the former copyreading and headline writing contestant of LHS Courier, batch 2003.

NSPC 2nd Placer conducts webinar on Editorial Cartooning

NSPC 2020 2nd Placer, Amos Ulang, a current UP Diliman student taking up Fine Arts, conducted a webinar on Editorial Cartooning last January 8, 2021, via Google Meet.

Amos Ulang along with Jade Louis R. Mempin, and Christian M. Gonzales joined forces to share their knowledge with campus journalists from Lagro High School and John J. Russell Memorial High School.

The webinar featured editorial cartoons from other artists and Ulang expressed his gratitude on Facebook stating, “Thank you Sir Rene Aranda, Sir Chico David, at Sir Jade sa pagpapahiram ng ibang cartoons niyo for examples.”

Aleks Garcia, a participant from LHS, stated “They were so immersed with teaching us what editorial cartooning is, that I also got immersed in learning. It was a very memorable experience! I would want to participate a second time if given a chance.”

Ulang showed enjoyment for the webinar and said via Facebook,

“Sobrang nag-enjoy kami!, Sana makapagturo pa ulit kami ng iba pang related sa art ‘pag may time!” Ulang said.

LHS resumes online Science remediation classes

DepEd mandated all public and private schools to have remedial classes for students in their failing subject areas last March 23, 2018, to help students cope with their failed grades and for them to pass the subject.

Lagro High School only offered Science Remedial classes for failing Grade 8 students since the S.Y 2017-2018, however it was discontinued due to COVID-19.

An online meeting with the parents of the failing student will be conducted first for consultation and for their consent as the remedial classes will take more time for the students to answer their modules and activities prepared by the teachers.

The student will have a separate google classroom and all the video lessons and worksheets prepared by the teacher will be uploaded, a target date will be set for them to watch the video lessons and answer all the worksheets given.

Mrs. Cristina Altoveros Delizo, a Science teacher and one of the teachers assigned for remedial classes said in an online interview that the only difference between the Science remedial classes now is that it is done immediately before the end of the grading period and it is online.

“Actually, maganda at maraming benefits itong science remedial classes. Dahil dito, pwedeng makabawi yung mga students na nagfail sa Science subject at tinutulungan nito ang mga students na makapasa. Isa pa ay naiiwasan na magrepeat ng grade 8 ang ilang mga students sa tulong nitong remediation classes.” Mrs. Delizo stated.

She also stated that 50 students during the 1st grading underwent Science remedial classes, but not all of them accomplished all the given worksheets and activities.

“Sa totoo lang, mahirap talaga iperform yung mga worksheets and activities kasi nasa online classes tayo and medyo nahihirapan akong mag manage ng time pero maganda ito kasi binigyan ako ng chance na mabago ang grade ko at para makapasa ako.” stated Jessry Costinar from Grade 8 Tindalo, a student that underwent the Science remedial classes.

"Mas natuto ako dahil don and maganda siya dahil nababalikan yung mga lessons mula sa umpisa. Mahirap yung mga lessons pero dahil doon mas marami akong natutunan. Masaya din ako kasi nakapasa ako at nagimprove na ang grades ko at hindi na ako nagreremedial." Gabriel Cuanan from Grade 8 Dapdap said in an online interview, a student that also underwent Science remedial classes.

LHS, Ateneo join hands for Project ALAM

Lagro High School partnered with Ateneo De Manila University to establish Project ALAM (Ateneo-Lagro HS using Apps from Mathplus Resources) for high school students last August 27, 2021 in a capacity-building webinar via Zoom.

Ateneo Math Professors and Proponents of Project ALAM namely Dr. Ma. Louise Antonette N. De las Penas, Dr. Jumala F. Sarmiento, Dr. Maria Alva Q. Aberin, Dr. Mark Anthony C. Tolentino, and Dr. Agnes D. Garciano attended the said meeting.

Ateneo De Manila University created applets that were helpful in Math and Statistics, students of Lagro High School will download and use them, and then LHS math teachers will also help in improving the applets.

Estrella Licerio, Grade 10 Mathematics teacher expressed her gratitude for Project ALAM, “The apps were really helpful not only for us teachers but also for our students. Pwede ring maging guide or review yung apps na binigay for students who have a hard time understanding a certain lesson.”

“Grade 10 students were able to use Factor Fuse, it helped them in finding the measure of an inscribed angle, angles formed 2 intersecting secants, 2 intersecting tangents, secant and tangent, and proving,” she added.

Fernando Garcia, STE 9-Goodall stated his experience In using the apps, “Very convenient naman po siya, hindi po nag t-take ng too much space for android users. Sobrang easy pong i download since may instructions na I g-guide ka. Hindi rin po lag compared sa other app.”

“Very interesting yung mga app na binigay sa main, at the same time helpful in enhancing our skills since STE students kami. Parang preparation for the next grade Level an rin.” Fernando added.

A survey was conducted after the student downloaded and used the apps, comments and suggestions were asked for the improvement of the apps.

Some of the applets were AlgeOps ,Catch the Carrot, Grid Game, Ordering Game, Just Keep Solving, AngleXplore, Total Commander for Grade 7, AlgeTiles, Drawline, Number Puzzle for Grade 8, Simplifying Radicals, Prove It, Two-Column Proof, Stats, Counting and Probability for Grade 9 and Factor Fuse, Central Inscribed Angle, Intersecting Chords Theorem, Secant Tangent Power Theorem, Two-Chord Power Theorem for Grade 10.

RITS donates Smart TVs for LHS Brigada Eskwela 2021

Richbar Institute of Technical Skills (RITS) gave two units of 40” Smart TV for this year’s Brigada Eskwela last August 16, 2021 at Lagro High School.

RITS became this year’s top contributor out of 32 donors for LHS Brigada Eskwela 2021.

“Ako ay lubos nagagalak dahil ang BE sa taong ito ay matagumpay sa kabila ng matinding hamon dulot ng pandemya. Ang spirit ng bayanihan ay buhay na buhay at naipakita sa pamamagitan ng pagtutulungan ng iba't ibang sektor ng lipunan para maging matagumpay ang BE.” said Mrs. Eva Claire P. Dugang, Administrative Officer II for Senior High School.

“Those Smart TV’s will be used by different departments for their classes.” said Brigada Eskwela 2021 Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Teresa A. Isidoro.

“Makakatulong siya as visuals, maiiwasan ang paper works in terms of presentations and mas gaganahan ang mga bata kasi techno ang lesson.” said Mr. Paul Benjamin Paz, an English teacher in LHS.

Based on the Record of Donation Received noted by Lagro High School Principal, Dr. Diego M. Amid, LHS also received electronic equipment (7 SMART TV, 1 epson printer, 2 PLDT wi-fi, 1 coffee maker, 1 unit of Humidifier, 15 Lenovo Tablet, 15 SMART pocket Wi-Fi, 15 Wireless Keyboard, 15 Keyboard Stand), health kits/equipment (65 packs Assorted Health Kit, 31 gallons of alcohol, 117 boxes of facemask, 978 pieces face shield, Vitamin C 16 boxes), school supplies (200 books about accountancy, 20 posters, 9 boxes of bond paper), and other things (8 pots of plants, 25 loaves of bread, data (for 78 learners), 3 portable sink, 3 shovels, P28k yearbook, P18k worth of cash).

Those donations also came from TELSTRA, Center for Barista, Rebisco Foundation Inc., Maynilad Water Services Inc., PIPCA Eastern Metro Manila Chapter, and other school organizations together with teachers, parents, and alumni.

Amid pursues 'Gulayan sa Paaralan Program'

Dr. Amid, Lagro High School’s principal sustained the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program, during this pandemic in Lagro High School, and made plantations for vegetables to promote sustainability and nurture nature.

“Si Ma’am Eva Perez ang nag motivate na magkaroon tayo ng urban gardening, at STE ang in-charge doon, dahil nga may Environmental Science tayo. Having Gulayan sa Paaralan has a positive impact on the economy and environment and also for the food security and production and also to promote urban gardening.” Thelma Valentino, Environmental Science teacher said.

Despite the pandemic, Dr. Amid decided to continue the program to make it an advantage especially for the school’s utility workers. Because of this, they had a source of food during the lockdown.

“Masaya ako na naisipan ng ating school principal at ng buong staff na magpagawa ng gulayan dahil bukod sa nakaganda ito sa school naging convenient din ito para sa buong staff, dahil nakatulong ito upang mapanatili ang healthy diet ng bawat isa at nadagdagan din ang aming kaalaman ukol sa pagaalaga ng mga halaman.” Rubelyn Piguron, one of LHS’ utility workers stated.

“Maganda na magkaroon ng Gulayan sa paaralan kasi this is where you can practice cultivation, lalo na kayong mga students, para malaman niyo yung kahalagahan ng pagtatanim at ano ang maidudulot sa inyo nito.” Thelma Valentino stated.

Dr. Amid considers urban gardening as an encouragement for learners to apply their knowledge to reality by allowing them to start doing things out at school which can help students develop an interest in agriculture after experiencing cultivation through urban gardening.

“As a student who experienced urban gardening due to Environmental Science, I realized that urban gardening helps us, students, to see the results of our decisions and actions because it is difficult to plant especially since we need consistency in watering the plant and monitoring it every day but in the end, it is all worth it because we can see our hard work. Having urban gardening at school has helped me to better understand the importance of gardening to our health, environment, and our community.” Grade 10 STE student Jennie Lacson, stated.
